A team of students consisting of the best spellers in Nigeria who emerged at the National Finals of the Nigeria Spelling Bee 2018 Edition are in Kenya to represent the country at the African Spelling Bee to be held in Kenya from the 22nd-25th November in Kenya.

The students are determined to defend the Championship (Snr) title currently held by Sheriff Mohammad, the Nigerian speller who won the senior category last year, as well as clinch other championship titles both in the Senior and Junior categories of the continental literary competition.

The students emerged as Nigeria’s representatives after competing at their respective State Level, through Regional Qualifies, up to the National Finals of Nigeria Spelling Bee which was held at Landmark University, Kwara.

These students won various prizes ranging from scholarships to the tune of N1,000,000 for the National Champion (Snr) and cash prizes, including an all-expenses-paid-trip to Kenya for the competition.

Among the team, we have:
Keren Chigozie-Nnah of Deeper Life High School, PH, the current Nigeria Spelling Bee champion (Snr)
Ogochukwu Anyaso of Bishop Okoye Spiritan Secondary School, PH, the 2nd Runner-up (Snr)
Honour Akinmusire of DLHS, PH, National Finalist
Neta Nnabuenyi of University of Nigeria Secondary School, the current National Junior Champion
Abdrahman Sheriff of King’s College, Lagos, the 1st Runner-up (Jnr)
Hauwa’u Abubakar of Matrix International Academy, Gombe, National Finalist (Jnr)

The spellers are accompanied by parents, siblings, coaches and officials both from Federal Ministry of Education and the organisers of the Nigeria Spelling Bee.

The team will be lead by the Representative of the Minister of Education, Mr Ayotunde Kehinde Omotomi of the Department of Basic and Secondary Education at the Federal Ministry of Education.

The Nigeria Spelling Bee is organised by the Bee Spelling Competition Initiative, an NGO with the endorsement of the Federal Ministry of Education and a member of the African Spelling Bee Consortium, the organiser of the African Spelling Bee Competition.
