It was an E.X.C.I.T.I.N.G  event at the Ondo State Qualifier of the Nigeria Spelling Bee which also marked the commencement of the 2017/2018 Season of the Nigeria Spelling Bee.

Spellers and schools across Ondo State were well represented and competed to clinch the slots of State Qualifiers to represent Ondo State at the South West Regional Qualifiers.

The competition kicked off with the Round One (non-elimination round) comprised of words from the 3 Major Nigerian Languages (Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo).

At the end of the first round, with spellers showcasing their knowledge of our indigenous languages, the competition progressed to the elimination were only English words were asked to spell.

After 4 rounds, 8 spellers emerged the Ondo State Qualifiers that will represent Ondo State at the South-West Regional Level. These spellers include:

  1. Esther O. Muyiwa (674) of Deeper Life High School Akure
  2. Etim Effiong (616) of Preston International School Akure
  3. Jegede Steve (664) of Deeper Life High School Akure
  4. Oluwaseyi M. Oke (656) of Model Secondary School Akure
  5. Oyindamola F. Oyetakin (651) of Model Secondary School Akure
  6. Sola M Olurankinse (618) of Model Secondary School Oba-Ile
  7. Toyosi Oke (661) of Model Secondary School Akure
  8. Ubokutomabasi Ekanem (591) Preston International School Akure

This spellers will go on to compete along side other spellers from South-West states for a chance to be National Finalists. National Champion wins N1,000,000 scholarship. N500,000 and N250,000 goes to the First and Second Runner-ups respectively.

Winners also represent Nigeria at the African Spelling Bee competition.

Registration for other states is still on-going as the competition progresses.
