The Nigeria Spelling Bee has just conducted the Borno State Qualifier of the competition in the city of Maiduguri.

The competition which was conducted on the 7th of February, 2018 is the first of it’s kind since the insurgency hit the North-East region of the country in 2009.

Against the popular media narrative, it was noted that Maiduguri is a beautiful and peaceful city, busy and bustling with so much human activity when the organizing team arrived late Tuesday evening (5th).

Spellers converged at the Federal Government College Maiduguri to showcase their spelling prowess and qualify for the next stage of the contest.

After a warm welcome address by the host school management and a presentation by the host students, the competition went into full force as Spellers spelt both Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo languages in the Fist Round (Non-elimination round).
The subsequent round consists of only English words and saw the emergence of the following Spellers as the best Spellers in Maiduguri who will represent the State at the North-East Regional Qualifier.

  • Alexander A. Ebube (871) of Federal Government College, Maiduguri
  • Fatima M. Modu (875) of Federal Government College, Maiduguri
  • Ramatu H. Abubakar (1562) of Darul Arqam Integrated School Maiduguri
  • Salisu Alhaji Dayaro (1564) of Darul Arqam Integrated School Maiduguri
  • Zainab I. Bukar (1567) of Darul Arqam Integrated School Maiduguri

These Spellers will compete alongside Spellers from other North-East states such as Gombe, Bauchi, Yobe, Adamawa, and Taraba for a chance to be one of the National Finalists who can win the #1,000,000 Grand prize and represent Nigeria at the African Spelling Bee in Mombasa Kenya.
